Healthy Active Schools

Healthy Active Schools

A healthy active school offers students quality physical education (P.E.) and chances for physical activity before, during and after the school day. Enabling students to get moving throughout the school day gives kids a leg up because physical activity helps students succeed in school and in life.

Kids should get at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Regular physical activity for students has been linked to better health, better behavior, and better learning, which all support academic success. Click here  to learn more about how enhancing P.E. will result in higher achievers.

Brain Science

Active kids learn better. Research shows a relationship between physical activity and brain function. Physical activity enhances brain function that p rimes students for learning. This can have an effect on academic performance, and behavior in the classroom. The infographic by Active Living Research illustrates the benefits of physical activity during school.

Enhanced P.E. In Suburban Cook County

Kids that are more active are healthier. Healthier students are more prepared for class, and when they are prepared for class they learn better.

Illinois has long required daily P.E. for students in grades K-12, as well as new learning standards for physical development and health. Healthy HotSpot partners are supporting schools in suburban Cook County in making physical activity a part of the curriculum throughout the school day. Enhancing P.E. and providing a quality physical education program entails changing policies, practices and curricula so that students spend more time in moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA)  during each class.
