The Forest Preserves of Cook County is one of the oldest and largest urban forest preserve system in the United States, managing more than 69,000 acres. These lands contain some of our region’s best preserved prairies, savannas, woodlands and wetlands. These globally significant ecosystems support rare native plants and animals. The Forest Preserves receive some 40 million visits each year from people seeking environmental education opportunities, outdoor recreation or simply an opportunity to reflect and escape from the stress of urban life.
