The Barbara Westbook Smith (BWS) Family Life Center is the not-for-profit at Covenant United Church of Christ located in Thorntown Township. The Center was founded with the mission to serve the residents in south suburban Cook County, IL. It is a multi-purpose facility focused on enriching the lives of youth, adults, and seniors through education, lifestyle, recreation, social engagement, and direct services. BWS started a food pantry in 1997, that now provides food to communities weekly. Since the start of the pandemic in mid-March, the food pantry has served more than 5,200 households and 18,700 individuals. BWS continues to support the following communities: South Holland, Calumet City, Calumet Park, Dolton, Burnham, Lansing, Riverdale, and Harvey.
