First West Nile Virus-Related Death in the State Reported in Suburban Cook County
CCDPH has confirmed the first human West Nile virus-related death in suburban Cook County and Illinois this year. A suburban Cook County resident, whose age is in the 60s, has died. Laboratory testing has confirmed that West Nile virus was a contributing factor to the resident’s death.

Cook County Officials Urge Protection Against West Nile Virus This Summer
West Nile virus season is here. Cook County Department of Public Health is launching a new public awareness campaign that encourages residents to take precautions against West Nile virus, a mosquito-borne disease, which, in rare cases, can be deadly. The virus occurs in humans when they are bitten by mosquitoes that contracted the virus by feeding on infected birds.
Dr. Kiran Joshi Appointed Chief Operating Officer for Cook County Department of Public Health
Dr. Kiran Joshi has been named chief operating officer of Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH). In this role, he will be the executive leader of the state-certified public health department serving approximately 2.3 million residents in suburban Cook County.
