LGBTQIA+ Pregnancy

At CCDPH, we celebrate and support diverse paths to pregnancy. Together, we can build a world that is inclusive, compassionate, and affirming for all.

The content on this page is meant to complement the information on the before, during and after pregnancy webpages, as well as the pages containing resources and fact sheets. It highlights special LGBTQIA+ considerations and additional resources we hope will be helpful as you embark on your path to becoming a parent.

Healthcare

Before Pregnancy:

  • Discuss fertility preservation if considering gender-affirming hormone therapy.
  • Find healthcare providers who respect and understand LGBTQIA+ identities, use correct pronouns, gender-affirming language and recognize your unique healthcare needs.
  • Foster open, respectful communication with your care team.
  • Seek out parenting resources that are inclusive and affirm diverse family structures.

Mental health and substance use

  • It’s important to take care of your mental health and have a support system in place. Pregnancy can be emotional, and having support can really help your well-being.
  • Pay attention to your mental well-being. Seek support if you experience stress, anxiety, or depression.
  • Continue to monitor and address mental health needs postpartum, as rates of postpartum depression can be higher in LGBTQIA+ families.
  • Visit the resources page for mental health and substance use resources.
