Resources to Help with the Holiday Blues

The winter holiday season can be a stressful time for many people, and it often brings feelings of sadness, loneliness, or increased anxiety. Cook County Department of Public Health encourages everyone to prioritize their mental health.  

Below are a few easily accessible resources in suburban Cook County that can help adults and youth. Many of the resources are free, accept walk-ins, or provide support via the phone or chat. 

 

  •  9-8-8 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline:

 If you or someone you know is having thoughts of suicide or experiencing a mental health or substance use crisis, 9-8-8 provides a connection to free, confidential support that is available 24/7.”  To reach Spanish-speaking counseling, press 2 after dialing 9-8-8. 

 

  •  NAMI Chicago Helpline: Call 833-NAMI-CHI (626-4244) OR Text ‘HELPLINE’ to 833-626-4244:

The helpline is a free and confidential resource that provides a listening ear and guidance and connection to the right mental health and social service resources over the phone. Available Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

 

  The Loft At 8 Corners is a space for teen mental wellness. Located at 9049 Monroe Ave. in Brookfield, IL, the Loft is a space designed to engage youth in their mental health journey. Teens can access The Loft if they need someone to speak to or a quiet space to destress. The Loft also offers individual and group support services, including mental wellness education for youth and their families.        Services are available on a walk-in or scheduled basis.  Hours: Monday – Friday: 1PM-8 PM; Saturday – Sunday: 10AM-6PM. For more information

 

  •  Living Room: 

Living Rooms are for adults 18 and older who may be in an emotional crisis or just need a safe place to speak with someone.  Services are free of charge, with no identification or insurance needed.
