Doxy PEP
What is Doxy PEP?
Doxycycline (or Doxy) is a well-known medication that’s been used by healthcare providers for decades to TREAT patients who tested positive for syphilis and chlamydia. Now, Doxy is also being used to PREVENT chlamydia, syphilis and gonorrhea after exposure.
When a medication is given to prevent an infection after someone has been exposed, it is called Post-Exposure Prophylaxis, or PEP.
Who can take it?
- All non-pregnant individuals at increased risk for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), even if not previously diagnosed.
- Adult gay, bisexual, other men who have sex with men, and transgender women who tested positive for gonorrhea, chlamydia or syphilis in the last year.
Where can I get it?
Talk to your healthcare provider or visit a nearby healthcare clinic to be screened for STIs and to find out if Doxy PEP is right for you. Visit our website for a list of testing sites in Cook County.
If your healthcare provider prescribes Doxy PEP, you will take a single dose (200mg) as soon as possible, but within 72 hours, after condomless oral, vaginal, or anal sex.
