Spotlight on Sisters Working It Out: Advancing Health Equity in Chicagoland

In recognition of Black History Month, we are proud to highlight Sisters Working It Out (SWIO), a dedicated partner in the fight against breast cancer disparities across Chicagoland. SWIO has been instrumental in addressing inequities in breast cancer prevention, detection, and treatment, working tirelessly to ensure that underserved communities receive the care and support they deserve.

As a trusted partner of the Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH), SWIO’s mission aligns closely with our commitment to advancing health equity. Together, we strive to expand access to compassionate care, essential resources, and meaningful opportunities that empower individuals and communities.

This Black History Month, we celebrate the impact of SWIO and reaffirm our shared commitment to reducing health disparities and promoting well-being for all.

While breast cancer remains at the heart of their work, SWIO understands that health disparities don’t stop at one disease. That’s why they’re broadening their focus to address a range of chronic health conditions impacting women of color, including diabetes, heart disease, mental health, HIV, osteoporosis, and more.

Expanding Their Reach: Programs That Make a Difference SWIO’s growth means more services, stronger connections, and greater impact. Their expanded programs include:

  • Breast Cancer Awareness and Education Movement: A 12-week Community Health Educator training program designed to build local health leadership.
  • Survivors’ Day of Beauty: A heartfelt event for cancer survivors and caregivers, offering education, support resources, bras, prostheses, wigs, and more.
  • Sisters Thriving Together: A patient navigation service that supports women throughout their health journey, from screening to treatment.
  • Monthly Support Groups: Safe spaces for women to connect, share, and heal together.
  • Free Transportation: Removing barriers by providing rides to and from medical appointments.
  • Nutrition Services: Comprehensive support through nutrition education and food distribution programs.

You can get involved with SWIO. SWIO’s success is rooted in the strength of its partnerships and its unwavering commitment to community-driven change.
