Behavioral Health

Community Behavioral Health provides outreach, public education, training, assessment, and funding to non-profit partners to promote mental well-being and reduce the harms of substance use. Our goal is to create safe and inclusive communities where suburban Cook County residents feel hope, meaning, and connection.

Community Partnerships

To respond to the significant rise in anxiety, depression, and substance use as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Cook County Department of Public Health allocated $24 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to support 31 partner organizations across priority areas of suburban Cook County. CCDPH offers virtual and in-person training on how to recognize and respond to an overdose to community-based and other organizations in suburban Cook County.

Public Information Campaigns

CCDPH provides public education on mental health and substance use public health through awareness campaigns:

  • Get Naloxone – CCDPH is helping spread the word about naloxone – a safe and easy to use medication that can reverse an opioid overdose. Be prepared. Get naloxone. Save a life. Visit Get Naloxone Cook County.
  • Hear2Hear You – In January 2023, CCDPH launched a campaign called “Here to Hear You,” in partnership with NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Chicago, to remove the stigma associated with identifying and seeking help for mental health issues.

Reports

  • Youth Suicide in Proviso Township. – At the request of a community organization, CCDPH produced a report examining youth suicide in Proviso Township and suburban Cook County. See the full report: Youth Suicide Report.
  • Opioid Overdose Data and Reports. – CCDPH regularly produces reports on opioid overdose deaths in suburban Cook County. Please see the Opioid Epidemic report.
  • Overdose Prevention Sites Research Brief – In 2022, CCDPH updated its review of the scientific literature on Overdose Prevention Sites. CCDPH found that Overdose Prevention Sites are a vital harm reduction strategy with clear public health benefits. See the full report: Overdose Prevention Sites.
  • Best Practices for Creating a Trauma-Informed Organization – CCDPH has facilitated the Trauma-Informed Care Collaborative at Cook County Health since 2018. In addition to trainings and regular convenings. Please see the full report: Best Practices for Creating a Trauma-Informed Organization.

Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH) has listed some easily accessible local and national mental health resources that provide support in Spanish. CCDPH encourages all community members to take advantage of the resources for support.

988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline

Living Rooms

The Living Room is a refuge for individuals in crisis—a safe, welcoming, and judgment-free space offering free, confidential, and immediate emotional support on a walk-in basis. The communities of Summit, Broadview, Franklin Park, LaGrange, Hazel Crest, Orland Park, and Elk Grove Village have Living Rooms.

NAMI Chicago Helpline

Whether seeking help for yourself or for someone else the NAMI Helpline is a free and confidential resource that provides a listening ear, guidance and connection to the right mental health and social service resources, over the phone.

FindTreatment.gov is a resource for persons seeking treatment for mental and substance use disorders in the United States and its territories. The website is available in English and Spanish, and results can be filtered to select providers that offer services in Spanish.
